Day 3 in Kotzebue (July 17, 2012)

It was a tad nippier here on this third day in Kotzebue, but that didn’t hinder the success of today’s festivities! After a pleasurable breakfast and devotional led by Mr. Roy, the team split up to complete several assignments. The men worked diligently to build a landing and steps for an elder in the community, the women prepared for VBS and their Ladies Event, and the girls decorated the Sanctuary with all sorts of Australian adornments. At 1:00, the team departed for the fairgrounds. They were greeted by considerably brisk winds and mild rain, resulting in a quick retreat back to the church to fetch additional clothing. Kudos to Ms. Joan for wearing those flip-flops with pride in spite of the weather. What a trooper! The Block Party consisted of face painting, tattoo receiving, bubble blowing, eating, eating again, eating AGAIN, playing with the new toys that the kids were given, and enjoying Brother Rickey’s lovely Oscar Mayer serenade and his vendor mentality. Although the number of anticipated activities was lessened because of the weather, the children thoroughly enjoyed what they were able to participate in. We were very pleased with the turnout and the chance to invite so many kids to VBS, which is only two days away! Back at the church, the group began the thawing process. Ms. Selena’s hot chocolate and Ms. Terresa’s STUPENDOUS dinner furthered their progress. Ms. Joan then led the devotional, and the team reflected on the day’s work. Afterward, the Sanctuary was converted to a movie theater and everyone watched “Big Miracle,” which was set in Barrow, Alaska. How nifty! We were able to give toys to three kids who were riding bikes outside of the church around 10:00 pm, Brother Rickey made sure to clean up after himself in the bathroom, and almost everyone made it to bed at a decent hour. A fabulous day, if you ask me. “Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that He may lift you up in due time. Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you.” 1 Peter 5:6-7 (Editor’s Note: Thanks to Taylor Maddox for blogging on Day 2 & 3)

Thank you for the awesome work you all did while in Kotzebue. My daughter and I made it to the “block party” and enjoyed the hotdogs. My daughter still plays with the toy horse she was given. It’s always fun to find blog posts from people who have visited our small town of Kotzebue.
